Heterochromia - First Impressions and Status on the Autumn Season

First Impressions and Status on the Autumn Season

drrt

Order by watching priority (more or less):

Lucky Star OVA: Finished
It’s always the OVAs that I watch that I like the most. Perhaps it’s because OVAs are mostly released after series that become rather popular and that I have thoroughly liked. Oh, with this pattern, perhaps there is hope for a Hidamari OVA? That would just be too brilliant.

Goku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei: Watching
Another OVA, yay yay! I will never get over the fact that SZS is over (same for Natsume Yuujinchou, by the way).

Bounen no Xamdou: Watching
It’s Eureka Seven, yeah, but it’s just too good! I want to see Haru and Akiyuki finally get together and have sex though, but it’s never going to happen T_T
On the other hand, while Xamdou is at the top of the autumn list, it would actually not have made the top of my summer list - which shows my biggest dilemma with this season: There are a lot of interesting things to watch, but nothing really amazing.

Michiko to Hatchin: Watching
Brazil is one of those countries I really, really want to go to one day. Ironically, it’s the movie Tropa de Elite that initiated my special interest for it. So, even if the story were horrible, I would still watch Michiko to Hatchin just for the setting.

Toradora!: Watching
After the second episode, it’s settled: I really, really like the Palmtop Tiger. And oh how I am rooting for them.

Nodame Cantabile Paris: Watching
What can I say, I’m surprised that I actually like this show especially since I dropped the manga around volume 13 and never watched the first season. Puri Gorota est superbe!

ef - a tale of melodies: Watching
It looks like it’s ranked pretty lowly, but I actually find it to be a really nice show and I love the silly overuse of Photoshop filters a lot. The only thing I dislike about it is the overly dramatic story coupled with the fact that I can’t really get myself to care about the characters.

Hakushaku to Yousei: Watching, will perhaps move to On Hold
This one is a guilty pleasure and I knew it from the moment I started watching it. It’s based on a LaLa manga and surely looks like that. <3 I don’t care about the bishounen, but my inner girl is delighted at the pseudo-victorian tea+cat setting.

Macademi WAsshoi!: Watching
Another guilty pleasure. It’s this season’s “Getsumen to Heiki Miina” for me, this show that nobody watches besides, well, me. Unlike Miina however, a bunch of people have watched the first episode and disliked it besides, well, me. XD

Kannagi: On Hold
Considering how everybody loves this show, I will definitely give it a second chance. It sounds like it has a good premise and is a 13-episodes-show after all.

Kuroshitsuji: On Hold
With 6 shows of this season I am following (+one OVA +Xamdou), I had to filter something out and so my choice fell onto KuroSHITsuji, which is nice and I would love to pick it up again, but right now it’s just not important, because ultimately, it’s just not really good.

Kyou no Go no Ni: On Hold
I will continue watching this - somehow. Being an absolute fan of the manga, I have to, but the bad animation is keeping me up quite effectively as for now.

Yozakura Quartet: On Hold, likely to be dropped
Am in the middle of the first episode.

Chaos;Head: Dropped, with possibility of revival
I heard the story is interesting, but the character design was too repulsing to finish the first episode.

One Outs: Dropped
In memoriam Kaiji: Highly anticipated, then disappointed. The show is too depressive and zetsuboushita for me to bear.

Tytania: Dropped
Space operas + me = Extremely low compabitility.

Mouryou no Hako: Dropped
I heard this is a yuri and looked forward to this, but oh my, girls giggling in the moonlight while holding their hands spinning is creepy.

Shikabane Hime Aka: Dropped
Gainax, you fail. How can you do this to me after Gurren Lagann. This made me remember how much I dislike series that are purely action.

Hyakko: Dropped
I actually didn’t find this funny.

Skip Beat!: Dropped
How could I ever have expected that a shoujo besides Ouran could possibly be good? No matter how great the original is (and the Skip Beat manga surely is), an anime would always look… horrid.

Other shows I might be picking up some day in the future:
* Jigoku Shoujo Mitsuganae
* Bihada Ichizoku (only to laugh at the first episode though)
* Kemeko DX
* Noramimi 2 (if it ever gets subbed, the first season didn’t after all)
* Tenshi Senshi Sunred (if it ever gets subbed)

Hmm… I have a few keepers and lots of on hold and dropped series. Which explains the recent influx of vector traces that’s keeping me busy.

Perhaps I should write up one of these season status thingamajig…

There doesn’t seem to be a vast amount of overlap between your watchlist and mine this season, although I wholeheartedly agree on the Lucky Star and Goku SZS OAVs. Xam’d is great too - I watched #13 yesterday and remembered how awesome it is.

The second season of ef is leaving me a little cold but it’s such a pretty and artsy-looking series I’m sure I’ll see it through to the end. Excellent soundtrack too of course. Kuroshitsuji on the other hand is a lot of fun but it isn’t going anywhere, which is a bit of a shame.

I’m really enjoying One Outs and Tytania, but I understand why they don’t interest you! The opening ep of Mouryou no Hako was misleading though - its less shoujo-ai and more film noir detective fiction, with added CLAMP gothicness.

I was quick to dismiss Toradora! but since yourself and even Bateszi are appreciating it, I’ll give it a second chance this week.

I cannot wait for the Natsume Yuujinchou second season though. ^_^

I blame the mediocrity of this season! Really, I think that tastes tend to differ greatly when it’s about guilty pleasures (shoujo? space operas?) while people with good tastes would agree that series like Xamdou, SZS or Planetes are great.

Actually now that I have watched episode 5 of ef, I totally agree with you on the coldness of the story. It is supposed to be touching and emotional, but this doesn’t really reach me. At this point, I mainly watch it for the style.
The manga of Kuroshitsuji supposedly has a (darker?) main storyline, we’ll see.

I might give Mouryou no Hako another chance if the rest of the series is different - actually I feel the same for Toradora. The first episode was still full of tsundere while the second episode shows a much more thoughtful Taiga.

Aaah, Natsume Yuujinchou! It makes me want to write a winter preview now - there are quite a few things I’m looking forward to.

You know, you’re right about Hyakko. It’s not funny, but it looks like it -should- be funny so I keep coming back for more like a sucker. :p

I don’t know how far you watched One Outs but I know I almost dropped it after 2 episodes, but then decided to give it another try and it only got better from there in my opinion. I think the depressive akagi/kaiji atmosphere has disappeared completely now at episode four.

I actually love this season far more than the summer season from which I only watched Geass for the most part. I’m actually following a lot of shows, including Skip Beat! which I’m in love with and Toradora! which is even better.

This season of ef is definitely not as warm, but I’m still loving the art, the style, and the story. I’m interested to see where it leads, and there are still 6-7 episodes left, so there’s plenty of room for change.

Sad to see Skip Beat! dropped, but at least you’re willing to give Kannagi another chance :D

pfft, shoujo adaptation elitist Sasa! =P

Skip Beat is fine! The transition of the character designs and the comical stuff was a bit shaky, but I’m loving it nonetheless :)

And One Outs!! I’m hoping you’ll give it a second chance because it’s much more awesome than Kaiji, at least for me. It’s shaping up like Eyeshield 21, not like the depressing Kaiji. Not sure if that’ll convince you though XD

Hakushaku to Yousei is in my on-hold list atm too, because it’s far too mediocre than the other season offerings. Will watch that in a less busier time, together with Casshern Sins. They’ll probably go hand-in-hand, shoujo fluff and sad depressing series on the other.

What about Tales of the Abyss?

Hakushaku to Yousei is both good, boring and interesting at the same time. How it manages to do this I have no clue but it´s still a pretty nice show. Nico rules :)

Skip Beat, somewhat interesting since it´s probably the first time I see a girl go that freaky over knowing she was only used by the one she “loved” instead of just going all “Nice Boat” or psycho on the person.

Chaos head is quite interesting as I have no idea on what´s real and what is imagination. And having a hobby to observe peoples behaviour it is really nice to see. Good music as well in the last ep I saw.

Kuroshitsuji is fun to watch, having a demon as your own personal butler for the rest of your life is really something cool :) Espacially now with how everything worked out in the last ep.

@Matte: Ah, well, if Hyakko turns out to be good, come back to me, haha.
One Outs just has a depressing premise, I guess, but if this changes over the first episodes, that’d be great! (It would be my very first series that I save out of the “dropped” dump. XD)

@Icy: I also like the style of ef a lot and the story is intriguing, albeit not as emotional as I have hoped. And of course Toradora is love! :)

@usagijen: Haha, shoujo adaptation elitist. It’s interesting how they always animate manga I really, really like, and then I look into it and get disappointed. Perhaps I can only watch shoujo shows like “Hakushaku to Yousei” which is not based on a manga I know and love. XD
I guess I really have to pick up One Outs again one day, heh.

@Caitlin: Woah, you dropped something! But that was a very good choice. :) And from what I can see, I’m sure there will be more meaningful shows next season.

@manga: Uh, fantasy is a no-go for me in 99.9% of the case.
    If the anime continues to follow the manga closely, Skip Beat will have a really great story - I just don’t like the animated version ^^;;;
I want a demon butler! But unless I’m bored with my life one day or something, I probably won’t pick it up anytime soon.
