How to spot a closet otaku’s room!

Inspired by MrMayat’s real-life-slice-of-life post, I remembered that I have been wanting to do an otaku room post for quite awhile but never did it because my room does not look like an otaku room at all - so here’s the solution: Let’s define it as a “closet otaku room”.

Why am I a closet otaku anyways? I have never been shunned for watching anime or reading manga, in fact, there were lots of people in my high school who did both as well, just not as excessively as I did. However, I simply don’t like it and just like TJ, I would always say “films, literature and cooking” or something.

There are always indications of subtle otakuness though and I guess my room is a good example for that. (It will only be my room for the next two weeks, afterwards I will be home again and my room would look even more closet otaku, hohoho. Even my large manga collection is hidden.)

Bed: Nothing.

Especially no pillow case with certain prints on. *hrr hrr*

Bedside table: Nothing.

Especially no tissue box. I like it to have water when I wake up in the middle of the night.

Wall: An otakudom related poster!

On the left side: Benjamin, currently my favourite mangaka/illustrator

Note how this looks like an art poster for anyone, except for those who actually know that Benjamin is a pretty prominent chinese mangaka. His manga are getting released in the US by Tokyopop now.

Shelf: Muji items

A card and a clock

Muji is a japanese company that produces basically everything you would need for your life. A look at their website shows how japanese and stylish everything is *fangirls* Also, Muji is expensive everywhere besides Japan, ugh. Totally an otaku thing.

I have also become a big fan of coffee, by the way. Not as much as tea though, as the next picture shows.

Desk: Lots of tea

And… one of them is an expensive japanese tea!

Nearly empty book shelf: Manga!

Also: A rather large camera bag! Even though I don’t take pictures of figurines, it’s still an indication of otakudom. If I had figurines, I would shoot them though. Show love to Sasa-ism and donate figurines to me!

I moved away most of my books, but there’s still some manga left for short-term reading needs.

Finally: Thank you for looking and bearing with the bad quality of the pictures. I was quite in a rush, I must admit.

We need a full scene photo! ^^ But wow, I’m impressed by how clean and neat everything is. There’s no way I could keep my apartment that nice even if my life depended on it!

Erm erm, thank you all for the nice comments, but actually the neatness is mainly for the pictures now. Maybe next time I’ll take a picture of the actual mess of my room, hahaha. It doesn’t take long for me to clean my room, it’s true, but whenever exams are coming up, it turns into a complete mess.

By the way, it’s a dorm room and I’m going to leave soon, so it’s not surprising that it kind of looks like a hotel room. However, I must admit that I don’t really have any ’style’ so I feel comfortable in this ‘hotel room atmosphere’.

Wow, impressive tidiness! I put the neatness down to the fact that it’s a girl’s room though. Expensive tea FTW!

I guess I must be a closet otaku after all as well, since my place looks quite ‘normal’ too. Aside from the DVDs and manga on my shelves all I have to show for it is a small Tachikoma model in my living room!

Muji is great, but certainly expensive - I got my bed from there and it’s extremely comfortable (my excuse for not being a morning person).

I’ve kept everything out of my bedroom apart from the bed itself and my bookcases, just to keep things organised (the advantages of not sharing with anyone!). I’ve only been in a couple of months mind, so any tidiness is just space that’s yet to be filled with stuff.

lol wow, your room is barren. I think the only thing that even slightly hints towards fandom in my room is one shelf on my bookcase with manga on it. Closet otaku ftw?

Neat room, even if it just the places where the images are taken.

Your room sure looks threadbare. Then again, it’s in new-ish condition. Mine, on the other hand…

Also, I’ll probably be doing another photo walkabout this weekend, thanks to your support.

I feel like I have an incentive to actually keep my room this clean now, haha.

@Martin: The tachikoma model must be so great! I love my tachikoma plushie to pieces too.
I also envy you for your Muji bed, aah! I remember you moved recently, I’m glad it seems you are feeling comfortable at your place.

@totali: Yeah, closet otaku unite! Haha.

@manga: There isn’t much more in my room indeed, besides a shelf with food and kitchenware actually, haha.

Thanks for the traffic Sasa. :D

Sure has the “just moved in” vibe going on. My room on the other hand…

A closet “otaku” here too. My paraphernalia are either in the closet, under the bed or somewhere underneath the clothes pile…

Also, thanks to your “inspiration”, I might do another photo walkabout this weekend. Posting on the other hand…

Actually, I have two and they’re both full of books (and like 2 mangas) and now I need another one. But dang, your dorm room is seriously very neat.

Yeah, Muji is ridiculously expensive in NYC. They have the prices in yen and dollars on everything, and I’m like “WTF, this pot is like $15 in yen but $45 in dollars.”
