Slice of Life Animes - But Who’s?

Well it seems that once again I’ve gotten that urge to just stop whatever I’m doing, sit down and start writing a post (I appologize to those who came here looking for a wonderful post by Sasa to only see this has-been of an aniblogger). It’s strange, but I dont get this feeling that often while I’m off at college making at least 2 mistakes a day -give or take 2-. Here I am, back at home for Spring Break. There’s barely any time at school to watch so when I’m home, I splurge on animu until I cant keep my eyes open anymore.

I could catch up on series I never finished but no. I dont quite feel like it this time. I feel like watching “slice of life” shows. You see, I just recently finished Sketchbook ~full color’S~ and even though I’ve heard from others that it was so boring that they dropped it in the middle of the second episode (read: Wildarmsheero), I found it to be positively wonderful… Is that fruity enough? “Positively wonderful”? Because it was that good for me. What’s there to like, though? The pacing’s slower than molasses and there’s no rocking Asian Kung-Fu Generation Intro song. Now hold that thought for a sec.

So to compensate for my lack of anymore new Sketchbook, I was happy to find that the Hidamari Sketch specials were released and I got my hands on Windy Tales and Aria. I gotta thank MAL for these recommendations. It’s a rather nice list they have. What was also recommended was Ichigo Mashimaro, Azumanga Daioh, Beck, Genshiken and Honey and Clover -my all time favorite- among many other great titles I neglected to mention. These aforementioned titles are among my personal favorites and it’s no surprise that I felt like rewatching all of them during my spree.

With the exception of Beck, none of these shows have an Ajikan-esque intro, and they’re definately not action packed like Gurren Laggan or even NANA (the biggest action you get in Aria is high tide). These shows follow the everyday life of regular people, yet why are they so fulfilling? As I said, I’m on Spring Break. My life’s been a roller coaster for the past few weeks and I really needed to wind down. By watching these shows, I got to emotionally live another life for a while and enjoy this short break.

I even got to see fireworks. I love hana-bi episodes. Dont tell me there hasn’t been a time where you wish there was a festival near your local shrine (hell, you wish you had a local shrine too, dontcha?) where you can go with some friends and sit on a hill on a blanket and just watch fireworks. In these shows, I like to imagine actually being able to do that with my best pals. If I wanted to go to a carnival here, I wouldn’t even dare. They’re so sketchy and you’re bound to get food poisoning.

But what about the other stuff? Going to school? What’s so fun about that? Sure real everyday life isn’t like an episode where something awesome happens but these episodes do remind me of the one day out of the season where we just go to tennis practice and instead of practicing, end up napping on the courts under the spring sun. Having tea in your friend’s room? That just happened last semester, before I had to worry about my gpa. We just sat in my room, had snacks and drank tea. I had a blast. Laying on the roof and looking at the sky? I would GIVE for a roof to lie on during high school. The closest I’ve ever gotten was star gazing in my school’s sunken garden. Gimme a bento, a bright blue sky, and a roof with a large fence around it and I’ll take that anyday.

So to answer the question: “But Who’s?”. It’s definately not mine, but whoever’s life I’m living at the time I’m watching these anime, just let me chill underneath the sakura tree for just five more minutes.

I found other posts similar to this in my search for pictures (speaking of which, forgive me for lack of good ones. I’ve lost my touch).

Now I could care less if “Slice-of-life” is a genre or not. It’s sorta like “tsundere”. Who knows, who cares, I like ‘em, gimme moar.

I’m not too fond of shrines but wish my country (especially where I’m at) had those awesome parks…

I’ve been in college for two years yet I’m watching way more anime than I did in high school. Then again, I lack a social life, but that shit’s overrated. Though, in any case, college students have the most free time, dude :V

Take a slice of life anime, darken the room you´re in, position yourself on the bed and start watching.

When you finally stop you´ll be having such a good calm feeling all over your body that you just fall asleep and then when you wake up it feels like the best sleep in years.

Going to school usually means meeting a lot of lovely ladies in various ways. Which sometimes can be the highlight of the day. High school was fun because we had so many lovely ladies in my class :p

amen to that. This is exactly why I love slice of life shows - maybe real life is hectic enough to demand an antidote to ‘wind down’ to, or maybe I’m just getting old. I don’t know the reason(s) but I’ve never tired of dipping into this kind of thing every now and then. You’re not alone in this, believe me!
