When is fanservice disturbing you ask? Well for me a grand exemple is easy, Girls Bravo. For a quick look at a scene that happends in the very first episode of the second season click here.
The thing he says over the gif is so damn right it´s scary. That scene along with a few couple of things happening in the first season is why I never finished either of them…
But then since basically that´s what fanservice is about how can I say it´s great in one anime/movie/game and not in another?
Well, it is kinda hard, since I can´t tell you a generic way of how and why I think some fanservice is great and the other is disturbing…
Regardless, I´ll do my best to make some kind of point here anyway.

Here we have Fallen Angel Flonne from Disgaea/Disgaea 2, yes I do spoil some stuff from my other post but heck, this can be considered fanservice since a lot of people really liked Flonne in Disgaea, so she just had to make a comeback in Disgaea 2 right?
This is a great kind of fanservice, since it gives the fans what they want and it isn´t just about showing of her skin in every possible way.

Here we have another way of showing fanservice, this time it´s Iori from I”s Pure DVD 2 Special: Ichitaka´s Delusional Diary. It isn´t in the show but a short special that comes with the DVD when you buy it.
This is also good fanservice, since it gives the audience what they want, some skin but it never gets boring with the skin and neither is the show about showing of these kind of images all the time throughout 26 episodes.

Yet another show that has some good fanservice, a classical type, a shower scene. This comes from Nanoha Strikers after the 4 young ones have finished their training for the day. The one and poor guy isn´t allowed in, if you think why then it´s the most basic reason…
This and their transformation sequences are basically all the time where their skin is showed in the show sofar. The show sucks but hey, it´s still got nice fanservice!!

Yes, this can also be considered fanservice, but more for the ladies :p Poor Hayate I just say. For me as a guy this is more of a comical fanservice than anything else that makes me roll around on the floor just laughing as hard as I can.
The show is just so damn fun to watch(Hayate no Gotoku).
Are you starting to get a hang of what I´m trying to say?
Fanservice when done correct it a great way of getting viewers to the show, if done badly then atleast for me the show loses it´s viewing points. I want more than just fanservice!!
Girls Bravo being an excellent example. First ep was kinda nice to watch, but the episode where she has the first banana of her life? That kind of stuff ruins the whole show. It might appeal to some male viewers, I´m not one of them though…

The whole series Inukami is filled with fanservice, or just humour, I don´t know. This image leads up to Keita having to take care of a lot of dogs… in human male form.
And the time he spends in the nude with an elephant “covering” him is fun to watch, sometimes it feels like it´s boring since it´s been used so much. But then again then the series switches to becoming fun again.
Well, it´s time to end this. The points I´ve tried to make is that fanservice can be either real great, real funny and give a show what it needs or bring a show down hard, really hard.
And it all depends on how it is used. Above I´ve shown how a game can be even better, the “ero-special” where everything goes, trying to bring back intrest to the show, humour and more humour.
In the first link is shown a image of a girl from Girls Bravo second season 01 where she has some trouble… I don´t find that kind of fanservice funny or anything, that stuff belongs in a whole other category.
Byebye!!

I agree with you, fanservice is a great thing, when used correctly. Showing some skin once in a while is alright, but filling a show with panty shots is just stupid.
Posted 02 Jul 2007 at 19:00 CE(S)T ¶I think I can use what you wrote there as the short version of my post
Thanks.
Posted 02 Jul 2007 at 19:20 CE(S)T ¶See, if I’m in the mood for it, a lot of fanservice is very good thing. It’s often just the kind of mindlessness I like in my entertainment. Fanservice isn’t great for making you want to watch an entire series , but from time to time something like Inukami, Girls Bravo, Magican Kanon or Ikkitousen is just what a (girl) needs. Yes they are pretty rubbish as animes go, but a lot of ‘good anime is just boring’ - at least fanservice keeps you entertained. What I do object to is excessive nosebleeding, thats just not nice to watch (i.e. Nagasate Airando)
I could argue that in more serious shows which aren’t entirely about the fanservice, showing some skin might detract from the main action, but then I’m not sure if that’s true. Good post tho, I definitely see where you’re coming from, its just I don’t entirely agree ^^;
Posted 02 Jul 2007 at 22:41 CE(S)T ¶People never tend to agree completely with me :p
Inukami, it was more fun than showing skin, since whenever they did something like that you knew Keita would be punished somehow by Yoko.
Posted 02 Jul 2007 at 23:13 CE(S)T ¶So I don´t agree with you on calling Inukami rubbish, it´s a great show and the fanservice makes me want to see more
Girls Bravo on the other hand, first ep was as I said a little funny, but that was all.
Ikkitousen, take every chance you get to show some fighting and naked skin… no good.
Ikkitousen Dragon Destiny OVA1 was kind fun, but it was like 4min or so, I can accept that much fanservice in such a short episode, but for a whole season? With that kind of fanservice? No.
Owen S brought this up with me, but in Kiddy Grade, he considers the excessive number of Panty Shots as fanservice. To me, it never occured to me. I did think they were showing a lot of them, but in my mind it never clicked. I think for something to be counted as fanservice you need to be in a state of mind to accept it as such.
Posted 03 Jul 2007 at 01:34 CE(S)T ¶@ AD2225: Yes, Kiddy Grade does have fanservice in it. And yes, in some cases you need to think so yourself that it is fanservice.
Taking a non-anime example of fanservice is Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. The whole movie is fanservice, giving fans of the game a movie with all the characters from the game that had a major impact on the story.
That´s one way of telling what “fanservice” is. In an anime like Shuffle, well it has to be swimsuits as fanservice since we see them in their ordinary clothes so much. That is one kind of fanservice, most often a “good” one
Posted 03 Jul 2007 at 02:11 CE(S)T ¶But Sasa, Inukami is all the moar hilarious because of all the pointless fanservicing.
Posted 03 Jul 2007 at 06:51 CE(S)T ¶@ DrmChsr0: Sorry, not Sasa who wrote this but me, Manga. Sasa´s guestblogger
Terribly sorry if I dissapointed you.
See the information at the end of the post? Here´s what it says:

I really need to make it more clear at the beginning of the post “”"XD
I’m sorry, Manga…
And TJ says that it’s easy to spot my writing! *tsk tsk*
@AD: Actually I think it can be a good thing if you don’t perceive something as fanservicey. That would mean that it was done rather naturally *hrr*
Posted 03 Jul 2007 at 22:52 CE(S)T ¶Doesn´t really matter if they think I´m you though :p
to have the author under the title usually works wonders

Posted 04 Jul 2007 at 07:10 CE(S)T ¶and does this make me some kind of chameleon? Adapting to how other write to make everyone else think I´m someone else???
cool
Personally, I think the whole “macho” take in Inukami was a breath of fresh air. I mean, how often do you see homo-erotic humour in anime? (I’m guessing lots, but it probably flew over my head)
But as for overall fanservice direction in an anime, skh already spoke for me.
Posted 04 Jul 2007 at 09:00 CE(S)T ¶Ouran, Ouran! The other homo-erotic humour anime is Patalliro, but that’s so old that the database of http://myanimelist.net doesn’t even have it (which I find very annoying, by the way, because I love the anime).
Personally, I also like fanservice, but actually a bad example immediately comes to mind: I love the manga of Joushi Kosei, because I think that the humour is smart in some kind of way. Also, the fanservice in the manga is so exaggerated that I can’t help but find it funny. The anime, however, looked totally plain and stupid to me, even though it was exactly the same storyline (just with a lot more pantyshots, and that apparently was the problem).
And… tadaa! Now, a “posted by” is at the beginning of each post so that the reader can quickly spot whose stupid rant it was *hrr*
Posted 04 Jul 2007 at 15:06 CE(S)T ¶Wasn´t so hard do to that right? Making it even more fun if someone should miss it
