Anime hitlist #10

It’s been awhile… now that I have finished watching so many series in these 4 months, I shall finally write about them, right? *g*

Finished series:
Yay, 20 finished series! Note that in fact, I totally love all the first 14 series, and I’m fangirling for Suiseiseki from Rozen Maiden and the manga of Paradise Kiss. It’s getting more and more difficult to do this kind of ranking, because some series simply can’t be compared with.

1. Kino no Tabi
2. Ichigo Mashimaro
3. Mushishi
Back then, a few days before episode 25 came out, I complained that it feels like an episode of my life would end after the ending of Mushishi. In fact, the series has been with me the longest time because the subs took such a long time to come out - it felt like a part of me. I believe there are people who dislike Mushishi because of it’s depressing atmosphere (me too, I had avoided the anime because of it), but I can’t imagine anybody with a clear mind saying it is a bad series.

4. Paranoia Agent
5. Ouran Kôkô Host Club
The ranking for Ouran should be obvious. I have joined the Fujioka Haruhi > Suzumiya Haruhi league and Milkmaster and I have already decided to watch the series again when Solar has finished the subs. Except for that single episode with the twins, I can’t help but bow down to the people who turned such a mediocre manga into a great series. You should have done the same with Perfect Girl Evolution!

6. Today in Class 5-2
The only reason why it is only no. 6 so far is its shortness (otherwise it would have been no.2 before Ichigo Mashimaro!). I will never forgive the animators for having only produced 2 episodes. Raaaah! It’s nothing but a comical series, yet I enjoyed watching it to an extent that can’t be put into words *g*

7. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yûutsu
8. Honey & Clover
What should I say? It’s over. Lots of people disliked the second season (especially because they dislike Hagu) but as you know, I don’t think like that. Even though the second season merely felt like a conclusion to what was built up in the first, it was worth to watch for grown-up Hagu alone *_*

9. REC
10. Azumanga Daioh
After REC, yes, because there were a few episodes I didn’t really like. Nevertheless, I acknowledge that this is a classic that everybody should at least take a look at. It’s funny, touching and features lots of sympathetic characters (Nyamo~!)

11. Haibane Renmei
12. Kemonozume
I mentioned several times that it was the best series of the summer season, right? It still ranks relatively low because the rest of the summer season is just so bad - or more exactly, the other series I’ve watched are simply even better. Kemonozume was very original, it had a very gorgeous premise and was executed in a very exciting manner until the last 2 episodes in which it simply became… weird. XD I love the series nevertheless *g*

13. Aria
14. Kamichu!
Why does Kamichu rank so low? Mainly it is because I really disliked a few episodes but loved others. I wouldn’t say Kamichu has any flaws and I was incredibly happy when it was subbed to the end. Ah, I don’t know. I enjoyed Kamichu more than Haibane Renmei, however I think Haibane Renmei > Kemonozume (by far) > Aria > Kamichu. Haha.

15. Ergo Proxy
It was a fun ride, definitely. The end was crappy as expected, but the episodes 3-16 were absolutely gorgeous, which means that I especially enjoyed the development of the story. The animation wasn’t that great sometimes and I don’t give a damn about the “philosophical meaning” of Ergo Proxy, but the story was very intriguing and the style was a feast for the eyes. I want another series like this!

16. Zettai Shônen, Tana arc
17. Sensei no Ojikan
18. Rozen Maiden
It has always been difficult for me to decide whether I preferred this series over Paradise Kiss or not. All in all, they both have their huge flaws that kept me up from fully enjoying both series. However, the manga (in the case of Paradise Kiss) and the Gothic Lolita effect plus the gorgeousness of desu (in the case of Rozen Maiden) made me watching these series until the end. If Rozen Maiden was 100% like episode 5, a slice of life series of the doll’s life, it would have ranked a lot higher.

19. Paradise Kiss
20. Hantsuki

Current series:
1. Gakuen Alice
2. Hataraki Man
3. Aria the Natural
4. Gokinjo Monogatari
5. Bartender
6. Sumomomo Momomo
7. Trapp Ikka Monogatari
8. Red Garden
9. Hiatari Ryôkô
10. Asatte no Hôkô
11. NHK ni Yôkoso
12. Shoujo Janggeum no Yume

PS. “Is Not Everything” by dredg sounds like early Deftones. Hell.
PPS. This blog needs a design revamp.

Haha. I’ve yet to finish some of the series you mentioned. Did I mention how I adore your taste in slice-of-life anime?

[...] A propos Paranoia Agent. Today, I re-read what I’ve written about it and noticed that I really was amazed by that anime back then. To me, this kind of amazement is something that Ghost in the Shell lacks too. ^^;;; I really enjoy this anime and I am so enthusiastic about having found such an ambitious and enjoyable series again, but there still is a difference between this and, well, Paranoia Agent. Currently, I think I will rank Ghost in the Shell no.6 in my finished series hitlist, behind Ouran and before Today in Class 5-2. [...]
